A Grand Canyon South Rim camping weekend
Itineraries · Arizona · Grand Canyon National Park, AZ · 3 days
A 3-day Grand Canyon South Rim camping plan for a group: Mather Campground, Mather Point and the Rim Trail, sunset at Hopi Point, sunrise at Yaki Point, a South Kaibab hike to Ooh Aah Point or Cedar Ridge, and Desert View Watchtower on the way to Flagstaff.
This plan is for a group camping at Mather Campground with a car and a gas stove. Day 1 stays on the rim and ends with sunset at Hopi Point, Day 2 starts before dawn with a short hike below the rim, and Day 3 follows Desert View Drive east to the Watchtower and on to Flagstaff. The hike has two turnaround points, so the group can split by fitness.

Tips
- Bring all the drinking water the group needs. Since the August 2026 flood, the South Rim has been under Stage 4 water restrictions: Mather is dry camping with portable toilets, and there's no water on the South Kaibab Trail.
- Wood and charcoal fires are banned at Mather Campground under the current restrictions. Pack a gas or propane stove for camp meals.
- Hermit Road is closed to private cars from March 1 to November 30, so ride the free Red Route shuttle to Hopi Point. There's no parking at the South Kaibab Trailhead; take the Orange Route or the Hikers' Express.
- Below the rim, the climb out takes longer than the walk down. Avoid hiking between 10 AM and 4 PM in hot weather and carry at least 4 liters of water each.
Plan it together in Freya
Every stop goes on your trip with its place from Apple Maps, so the group gets directions, drive times and the weather. Then swap things out, vote and split the costs.
Change any stop, move things between days or add your own, then add your version to Freya. Not on an iPhone? Copy the plan for the group chat.
Questions
Is 3 days enough for Grand Canyon National Park?
For a first visit, yes. This plan fits 18 stops into 3 days (Day 1: The rim and a Hopi Point sunset; Day 2: Sunrise and below the rim; Day 3: Desert View and the drive out). Add a day if your group likes a slower pace.
When is the best time to go to Grand Canyon National Park?
April to May and September to October, when nights are cool and hiking below the rim is safer than in summer.
Where should a group eat in Grand Canyon National Park?
This plan stops at Canyon Village Market & General Store, Arizona Steakhouse, Harvey House Café, We Cook Pizza & Pasta and Cameron Trading Post. Vote on dinner in Freya if the group can't agree.
What if the group wants to split up?
The ideas under “If we have time” (Tusayan Pueblo Site) are optional. In Freya, set who's going on a stop so everyone knows where to meet back up.
How do we use this plan as a group?
Tap Add to Freya on an iPhone. Every stop goes on a shared trip with its place from Apple Maps, so the group gets directions, drive times and the weather. Friends join from a link with just their first name, then swap stops, vote on plans and split the costs.
